Four Portage Central High School Seniors recently won honors in The Breakfast Optimist Club of Kalamazoo’s (BOCK) Oratorical Contest based on a theme of “How my Optimism will help me press on to ‘Greater Achievements of the Future.’” The Oratorical Contest was held Saturday, February 7, 2015, at the Greater Kalamazoo Association of Realtors (GKAR) auditorium, 5830 Venture Park Drive, Kalamazoo, MI 49009.
Winners in the Girls’ Division were 1st Place: Hattie Foley, 2nd Place: Katelyn Kring, 3rd Place: Malak Ghazal and in the Boys’ Division 1st Place: Luke Ostrem. In addition, Foley and Ostrem will be continue on to compete at the Regional Competition where they will compete against winners from other Optimist Clubs in the area. The winner of the Regional Competition will be sent to the District level with the chance to win a scholarship.
“All the students did a wonderful job presenting their speeches about the question posed as to how their Optimism will affect their future,” Club President Marilyn Lenox said. “The members of our Optimist Club have no doubt that all the students have a bright future ahead of them.”
The Breakfast Optimist Club of Kalamazoo has been participating in the Optimist Oratorical Contest for the past two years and has been active in the community since 1988.
