Local Students Win Optimist Club Oratorical and Communication Contests

KALAMAZOO, MI – Madison VanWinkle and Benjamin Miller recently won the Breakfast Optimist Club of Kalamazoo’s oratorical contest based on a theme of “How My Best Brings Out the Best in Others.” And, Mykl Makela won first place in the Communication Contest for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing based on the same theme.
There were a 9 contestants in oratory and 4 contestants in the communication contest.
Ms VanWinkle and Mr. Miller were awarded first place honors in oratory. In addition, VanWinkle and Miller will be sent to the district level where they will compete against winners from other Optimist Clubs with the chance to win a $2,500 scholarship. There is no district level contest for the Communication Contest for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing this year.
Optimist International is one of the world’s largest service club organizations with nearly 100,000 adult and youth members in over 3,000 clubs throughout the world. The Optimist Oratorical Contest is one of the organization’s most popular programs, with more than 2,000 clubs participating annually.
