Our club participates or sponsors the following activities:

Right Start Auction

This fundraiser supports our signature project;  Back to School Shopping.  The auction party is held in mid-July with both a silent and live auction.  Ken Lanphear has been our auctioneer for over 5 years.  We sell raffle tickets which are also your ticket to the event.

Back to School Shopping

For over 13 years we have been able take up to fifty children identified by Kalamazoo County’s Family and Children’s Services shopping for new school clothes. The club also provides backpacks full of age appropriate school supplies to give them the “right” start for their school year.

CCC – Childhood Cancer Campaign

BOCK sponsors an annual golf outing fundraiser with a portion of the proceeds going to Johns Hopkins University to provide financial support for childhood cancer research. Locally, we have partnered with the Bronson Pediatric Oncology Unit having donated such items as phone cards, hats, a hat tree and beads for the Journey Beads program.

Essay Contest

The Essay Contest is sponsored by Optimist International to give young people the opportunity to write about their own opinions regarding the world in which they live. The approach can encompass a young person’s personal experience, the experience of their country or a more historical perspective. In addition to developing skills for written expression, participants also have the opportunity to win a college scholarship! BOCK holds a contest in late January and presents awards to the first, second and third place winners. The first place winning essay is then sent to the Michigan District for an opportunity to win at District and maybe on to the International level.

Oratorical Contest

The Optimist Oratorical Contest gives youngsters the chance to speak to the world. More than $150,000 in college scholarships funded by the Optimist International Foundations is awarded annually from this program. BOCK holds the contest in February with the first place winner going on to the regional contest with an opportunity to win at District and then on to the International level.

Respect for Law

The purpose of this event is to recognize local leaders for their efforts in providing a safe environment for area residents to live, particularly those involving children. Typically, local judges, police officers, and others in the judicial system are invited to a club meeting to speak and then are recognized with a token of appreciation by the club.
