“By Providing Hope and Positive Vision, Optimists Bring Out the Best in Kids.”
The purpose of our Optimist Club is to develop Optimism as a philosophy of life. We also aid and encourage the development of youth, in the belief that the giving of one’s self in service to others will advance the well being of human-kind, the community and the world.
BOCK meets weekly on Thursday from 7:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. at Michelle’s on Romence Road in Portage. Meetings begin with the call to order, a moment of silence and the Pledge of Allegiance. The Club president welcomes guests, shares announcements of upcoming events and birthdays followed by an introduction of guests and the speaker/program. Our Sergeant at Arms rounds out the meetings with a light hearted collection of fines (25 cents each) for various ‘infractions’ and gives all members a chance to share current happenings in their lives. The money collected helps fund our Youth Activities. Members can participate in the 50/50 cash raffle and gift provided by the weekly greeter. Tickets are $.25 each and helps support our Administrative Fund. We then recite the Optimist Creed and adjourn by 8:30 a.m. so people can get on with their day.
There are no meeting attendance requirements, however members are encouraged to attend regularly. At our annual installation banquet members are awarded a tab for their Optimist pin representing the number of years of perfect attendance for their Optimist pin. Several members have achieved over 20 years of perfect attendance. If you can not make all the weekly meetings, participating in an event or a committee meeting, etc. are considered make-ups.
Your level of participation in fundraising and community service projects is largely a decision that you make based on your other life commitments. Members are not expected to participate in all project/fundraising activities. Most projects have a committee chair. If you have an interest in a particular project or service activity, talk to the committee chair or the club president to find out how you can be involved at a level that is comfortable for you.
Dues: The Optimist year runs from October 1 through September 30. Annual dues are $110 and can be paid in full or on a quarterly basis. Quarterly dues are #27.50 and payable the 1st of each quarter.
Zone & District Meetings: Our club belongs to the Michigan District Optimist and Optimist International. The District holds meetings on a quarterly basis, generally on a weekend to allow us to meet with other clubs and share our projects. There is also an annual convention held by the Optimist International in July. Optimists from all over the world join for four days of workshops and training for the incoming officers (i.e. President-Elect, Governor-Elects).
