Oratorical Contest Winners

This morning we were honored to have the 2016 Oratorical Contest First Place Winners speeches performed. The topic for the speeches was “How My Best Brings out the Best in Others.”

Unfortunately, the first place winner in the Boys division, Benjamin Miller, could not be at the meeting, so his teacher and BOCK member Theresa Mills stepped in and read his speech.

Then the 1st place winner in the Girl’s Division, Madison VanWinkle performed her speech on the same topic. Madison’s speech was incredibly moving as she recounts how learning American Sign Language helped her communicate with a family at the coffee shop where she works. Well done Madison. We are proud to have you representing BOCK at the 3rd Quarter District Conference on May 7th in Dearborn.

Theresa Mills was awarded her Bronze level PGI pin-back from past-President and PGI chairperson,  Marilyn Lenox-Bosma

If you are interested in going to the conference you need to let Linda Ingersoll
know before Tuesday, April 26, 2016.

Communication Contest Winners

2016 Communications Contest Winners: Left to right: Third Place Winner, Isabelle Tai; Second Place Winner, Kadeidra Epps and 1st Place Winner, Mykl Makela.

This morning we were honored to have the 2016 Communication Contest Winners perform their speeches on the topic, “How My Best Brings out the Best in Others.”

The actual Communications Contest was held February 13, 2016, in conjunction with the Oratorical Contest at the Greater Kalamazoo Realtors Association auditorium (Thank you, Angela McMillen). While this is not the first time that BOCK has held a Communication Contest for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students it is the first time in recent years. A huge Thank You Nancy Gallihugh for Chairing this event, and for Dan Mills for Charing the Oratorical Contest.

The Communication Contest is specifically for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. This year’s contestants were in the third through fifth grades. They delivered their speeches by speaking, or by signing. We were fortunate to have an ASL interpreter on hand to let the students know what was being said in the BOCK announcements and to speak the signed speeches for the audience.

These speeches were well written and heartfelt. Each student touched on how their experiences being deaf or hard of hearing has affected their relationships with others in a positive way. There was great enthusisam and pride around the accomplishments of these people and we are looking forward to holding another Communications Contest next year.
